Review - The Archived by Victoria Schwab + Vicious

Hey Y'all,

I was only planning to review the first in a new YA series, The Archived by Victoria Schwab. But then I received (through netgalley) & devoured the first hundred pages of her upcoming book, Vicious. So I'll be reviewing Archived & previewing Vicious today. But first a reminder:

*Broken Record Plays Squeakily*

Don't forget about the Clarion West Write-A-Thon it's still going on through August 2nd and is a great cause, so please donate! =)

On to the reviews!
Description from GoodReads:
Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books.

Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.

Da first brought Mackenzie Bishop here four years ago, when she was twelve years old, frightened but determined to prove herself. Now Da is dead, and Mac has grown into what he once was, a ruthless Keeper, tasked with stopping often—violent Histories from waking up and getting out. Because of her job, she lies to the people she loves, and she knows fear for what it is: a useful tool for staying alive.

Being a Keeper isn’t just dangerous—it’s a constant reminder of those Mac has lost. Da’s death was hard enough, but now her little brother is gone too. Mac starts to wonder about the boundary between living and dying, sleeping and waking. In the Archive, the dead must never be disturbed. And yet, someone is deliberately altering Histories, erasing essential chapters. Unless Mac can piece together what remains, the Archive itself might crumble and fall.

Review: Victoria Schwab is my new hero. Seriously. I put off reading this book for way too long. Also, before I get too into my rambling, I purchased this book  - no ARCs or anything. Archived is a fresh and innovative world that sucks you right in and doesn't let go.  Aside from the terrific world building, the murder mystery was very well done. I can't wait for Unbound! Highly recommend.

5/5 Stars

Description from GoodReads:
A masterful, twisted tale of ambition, jealousy, betrayal, and
superpowers, set in a near-future world.

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.

Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will.

Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?

Review: After reading The Archived I knew I was really looking forward to reading Vicious. Just a note, Vicious is Victoria Schwab's first book for Adults and is written under the name V.E. Schwab. It's really hard to judge something that you've only read part of, but I'll give it a whirl. The first 109 pages pretty much set up the back story interspersed with snippets from the present day. I really did get sucked in to the story though. It may just be me, but when I read a book I always subconsciously keep track of how many pages until the end. Not so here, I got to the end on my kindle and I had a "KHANNN" moment. Except is was more of a "SCHWABBBB" moment. I can't wait to read the rest in September and see what happens. I'll post with a full review of Vicious once it comes out in September.

No stars until I finish reading the rest once the book is released in September.
