Today I'm reviewing a short story from Netgalley, The First Lie by Diane Chamberlain.
The First Lie is a short prequel to Chamberlain's upcoming Necessary Lies and is the story of Ivy Hart, a 13 year old in 1958 North Carolina. Ivy lives in a small house on a generous farmer's property with her grandmother and pregnant 15 year old sister, Ella May. Intrigue abounds over just who is the father of Ella May's baby and why she's keeping quiet on the subject.
At 35 pages, The First Lie is a great teaser before Necessary Lies. It's just enough to whet the reader's appetite. Also, as a Southerner, I'm always on high alert for forced sounding Southern dialect - but no such problems here! I'm looking forward to finding out just what dark family secrets the Harts are hiding.
