Today, I'm reviewing the YA book I received from Netgalley called Shadow Embraced by Cheree Smith. Shadow Embraced is the story of a young dhampir (half human/half vampire) named Scarlett with no idea of who or what she is, only that she loves to fight. After one fight too many she winds up at a hidden away school that is specifically for supernatural types. But Scar is the only dhampir, and finds out quickly that it's because dhampirs are notoriously unstable. Something that is of special concern to the staff when students begin to go missing. Scar is caught between learning to control her newly embraced abilities, attempting to fit in, and a search for answers that may very well lead to her own demise.
On to the review!
Shadow Embraced has an original plot that moves along at a breakneck pace. While the main character of Scar is well thought out and can certainly carry the book I would have liked to see some of the other characters fleshed out a bit more. However, seeing as this is only the first book in the series I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of the characters and the world of Haven. The mystery that was central to the plot was exciting, but my favorite part had to be the fight club activities. I can't wait to read more about the Centurions & Ghost!
Check back tomorrow for my review of Sworn to Raise by Terah Edun
